Guidelines for Background Papers

The Heinrich-Böll-Foundation, WWF Germany, the European Climate Forum and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy are organising a climate conference in Berlin, Germany, 28-30 September 2006. Under the title: ”KyotoPlus: Escaping the Climate Trap”, the three-day-event will include high-profile speakers as well as public fora for the discussion and elaboration of strategies to combat climate change.

In the preparation of this conference, the organisers are inviting selected authors to write short and concise papers outlining the themes of the conference and providing stimulating food for thought. The papers will address the four sections of the congress: New Targets, New Technologies, New Policies and New Alliances. Furthermore, a number of cross-cutting issues may be covered by the papers (see the attached structure). Objectives of the papers

Each author should endeavour to address the specific issues of her/his expertise with scientific precision in a clear and understandable language. The organisers will contact highly qualified authors and ask for contributions to the respective areas. For each section at least three papers will be made available. These will bring together the most updated scientific knowledge and public/private discussions on climate change and technological opportunities to combat climate change.

Target groups of the papers

The papers are targeted at the scientific community, policy-makers, climate negotiators, journalists and the interested public. Identifying new opportunities to combat climate change is a problem that cannot be solved by scientist and policy makers alone. It is necessary to engage a broader public. The authors should therefore make strong efforts to avoid unnecessary technical style and summarize conclusions in a language, which is understandable to various informed publics. Language and publication

The papers will initially be published on the KyotoPlus web site (www.kyotoplus.org). Most of them will later be reworked into chapters of a book (title to be defined), which will be edited by Hermann E. Ott and others. A publisher for publication in 2007 will be identified at a later stage.

The distribution network of the Böll foundation may be used for a wide distribution of the book. Authors are asked to provide their contribution in either English or German. The papers will be posted on the KyotoPlus webpage in the language provided. Before being placed on the webpage, some minor editing may take place. Lead editor for this process is Hermann E. Ott. Pending final agreement, the book may be published in a German and English version. Guidelines for authors

  • Each paper should not exceed 3.000 words.
  • Figures and tables should be included only when relevant to the discussion.
  • Citations and references should be properly documented.
  • Difficult or unnecessary language should be avoided.
  • Submission deadline: July 20st, 2006.
